Gut Microbiome Research
One of the Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure good health and promote the well-being of all age groups (SDG-3). In the past year, COVID-19 has imposed huge impact on global human health. Since the development of anti-epidemic vaccines or drugs requires lengthy design and verification, natural compounds that can alleviate COVID-19 have attracted widespread attention. Among them, there has been a surge in research on probiotics' ability to effectively manage COVID-19, and the relationship between immunity and gut microbiome has also been raised.
In addition, the relationship between different sub-clinical health problems and gut microbiome has also been proved. A community research conducted by the Hong Kong Society of Gut Microbiome has confirmed that different sub-clinical health groups, such as eczema, chronic constipation, overweight, etc., lack specific kinds of probiotics. The research also indicates gut microbiome dysbiosis is common. Therefore, to advance in sustainable development and promote the well-being of mankind, we should not delay our attention to gut microbiome.
STARS will work with other organizations such as the Hong Kong Society of Gut Microbiome and share professional resources from the medical and academic circles to implement more large-scale gut-related community research. It is hoped that the big data obtained can enhance the precision of prevention, diagnosis and therapeutics of different health problems, so as to prepare for challenges of future epidemics and improve the well-being of human.
